Fire at Rubbertown chemical plant sends black smoke into the air

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Firefighters from Lake Dreamland and Pleasure Ridge Park Fire Departments responded Wednesday to a fire at a chemical plant on Campground Road in Rubbertown.

MetroSafe said the fire was reported about 6 p.m. There were no evacuations or alerts for nearby residents so far. Louisville Metro Emergency Services said the fire had no impact to the community.

Lauren McClure, a member of the public relations team at Michelin, which owns American Synthetic, said the fire started inside one of the buildings and caused damage to the roof of the plant. She said employees were injured and taken to a nearby hospital for further evaluation. Those injuries include an injured ankle and a burn, officials on scene said.

People nearby reported seeing a plume of black smoke in the area. There is no word on what was burning or how the fire started.
