Fort Knox celebrates 100 years with human formation

FORT KNOX, Ky. (WDRB) -- Fort Knox is celebrating its centennial.

The U.S. Army post marked the 100th anniversary on Wednesday by creating a human formation on Brooks Parade Field. At least 2,000 soldiers and civilians lined up to spell out the words "Fort Knox."

Photos taken at the event commemorate similar photos taken in 1918 at what was originally called Camp Knox. A release from Fort Knox said the post wanted to salute the military's installation in appreciation of the community's support over the years.

The original photo included 10,000 soldiers and was taken four days after the armistice was signed Aug. 11, 1918 by Allied forces and Germany, ending World War I.

There was also a flag presentation at the event from the Association of Defense Communities to recognize Fort Knox as one of five military communities named a Great American Defense Community for 2018. The distinction honors communities that have worked to improve the quality of life for service members and their families.
