LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Indiana is becoming an "island" in the Midwest as surrounding states have adopted some form of legalized marijuana legislation, but a new survey suggests Hoosiers are ready for change.
According to a poll released by Safe and Regulated Indiana, a newly-formed advocacy group, roughly seven out of 10 Hoosier voters support marijuana legalization. The survey was conducted just before Election Day, reflecting strong bipartisan interest in reform.
Joe Elsener, spokesperson for Safe and Regulated Indiana, said Indiana has an opportunity to learn from neighboring states like Michigan, Kentucky, and Illinois.
"We have the ability now to look at all these states that have gone through this and learn best practices," said Elsener,
Elsener emphasized this isn’t a political movement, though Indiana Republicans have historically resisted cannabis legalization.
Governor Eric Holcomb has maintained his stance, stating, "It’s still against the law.”
Governor-elect Mike Braun indicated the statehouse will prioritize discussions on medical marijuana in 2025.
"When it comes to the recreational side, I will be taking my cue from law enforcement," Braun said before Election Day. "But I think you will see a big discussion on medical use of marijuana in our state, and I will be ready to discuss it.”
Indiana lawmakers declined to hear a cannabis legalization bill last year, and no formal legislation has been proposed yet for this legislative cycle.
Elsener said Indiana can’t afford to stay behind as other states reap the financial and social benefits of legalization.
"I think the ultimate goal is to go all in — full recreational, medicinal, and all the above — to take advantage of all the benefits the state of Indiana is missing out on," he said.
Studies suggest Indiana is losing $30 to $40 million annually in potential tax revenue from cannabis sales.
As the conversation gains momentum, Hoosiers may soon see whether the state is ready to step into the growing trend or remain an outlier.
