LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Jefferson County district judge nominee Danny Alvarez died Wednesday after suffering a heart attack, sources close to the family tell WDRB News.
Alvarez won the Jefferson County 9th Division primary Tuesday night with nearly 31 percent of the vote. A graduate of the University of Louisville, he began his career as a Public Defender before launching his own law firm in 2003.
A statement released by Jonathan Hurst on behalf of family members says Alvarez was "a true public servant, a humanitarian, and a champion for human rights and the immigrant community."
Danny Alvarez was a true friend, a loving husband and a devoted father of three. Danny spent the day humbled and grateful to this community after his historic victory last night. He would want us to honor his memory by showing compassion and love to all people. The family asks for space and love during these difficult times.
Several Louisville leaders offered their condolences Wednesday night on social media, including Mayor Greg Fischer:
So saddened by the passing of Danny Alvarez. He was a tireless advocate for justice, a vessel of hope and inspiration for so many. I am grateful to have known him. Prayers for his family and friends. Descansa en paz.— Mayor Greg Fischer (@louisvillemayor) May 24, 2018
According to his Facebook page, Alvarez leaves a wife, Therese, and three children: Gabby, Ben and Bela.
