LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- For about as long as it's been around, Rita Fritch has been shopping and socializing at Jefferson Mall in Okolona.
Her friends, now seniors, have been right there with her every step of the way.
"We just meet up to visit," Fritch said. This is our social time."
But as a group, they've been collectively worried about the future at the Jefferson Mall.
"I'm afraid unless we get something in here to keep it alive, it will disappear," Dewey Johnson said.
However, the mall is making moves. The old Macy's is on the verge of a major transformation, and construction is already under way.
"Malls are changing. They aren't going away," said Stacey Keating of mall ownership company CBL Properties. "People are always going to have that need to interact with their family and their friends."
Around the holidays this year, Round One Bowling and Amusement will roll in and open its doors.
"They offer bowling, arcades, karaoke ... they have an extensive food and drink menu," Keating said.
Long gone are the requirements of four retail anchors in a mall. The entertainment complex is on trend with what's happening nationwide.
"So we are responding by bringing in more entertainment, more dining options, giving people more reasons to come to the property," Keating said.
It's happening across town too. Plans are in the works for a Topgolf driving range in the Old Sears at Oxmoor Center.
Fritch and her friends are excited about the possibilities at Jefferson Mall, just as long, she jokes, as there's not too much fun being had.
"We're mature, so wild is different," Fritch said with a smile.
