Judge calls Ky man accused of murder a danger to the public

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- An 81-year-old southern Kentucky man charged with killing a former sheriff will need $5 million to get out of jail.

A judge increased Charles Hammer's bond, which was originally $150,000.

Hammer is charged with killing a former Monroe County sheriff and former Tompkinsville Police Chief Herbert Proffitt.

Circuit Court Judge David Williams called Hammer a danger to himself and the public because he allegedly threatened public officials.

Proffitt arrested Hammer a decade ago, and authorities have said they think a desire for revenge prompted the slaying.
