New study says opioid overdose figures could be much higher than suspected

FRANKFORT, Ky. (WDRB) -- Kentucky has filed a seventh lawsuit against a company it accuses of profiting from the state's opioid epidemic.

Attorney General Andy Beshear filed the lawsuit Thursday against Mallinckrodt, a St. Louis-based pharmaceutical company.

The suit claims Mallinckrodt promoted opioids by falsely claiming they could be prescribed in higher doses without revealing the potential for addiction.

In a release, Beshear said, “Our lawsuit alleges Mallinckrodt’s dangerously false marketing of its opioids correlates directly to the skyrocketing addiction, overdoses and deaths in Kentucky.”

Beshear says the company generated over $3 billion in revenue in 2017, and he wants them to pay for the damage caused to the state.

"We will not stop fighting for our families. We will not stop seeking justice. And we will not be silent when this epidemic kills four Kentuckians day after day after day," he said.
