Students applying to popular JCPS schools face fierce competition

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- There are many new faces who will be greeting students as new principals when they return to Jefferson County Public Schools on Wednesday for the 2015-16 year.

Here is a running list of those who are new: 

Academy @ Shawnee: Venita Benboe, who was an assistant principal at Moore Traditional School, was named the new principal at the Academy @ Shawnee on Aug. 10 by Superintendent Donna Hargens. Benboe replaces Houston Barber, who resigned from JCPS in June

Alex Kennedy Elementary: Kevin Nix, who had been director of early childhood education for JCPS, takes over at Alex Kennedy, a former middle alternative school that has been converted back into an elementary school.

Bowen Elementary: Lisa Wathen, who had been the assistant principal at Bowen, takes over for Steve Tyra, who retired.

Brown School: Angela Parsons, who had been the assistant principal at Brown, takes over for Tim Healy, who retired.

Buechel Metro High: Donald Dillard was named the new principal for the revamped alternative school on July 27. It will serve both middle and high school students. FYI: The school board will also vote on a name change for the school at its July 27 meeting.

Cane Run Elementary: Kim Coslow, who had been an assistant principal at Greenwood Elementary, was named the new principal on July 16. She replaces Gwen Goffner, who took a new position in JCPS human resources as a recruitment and staffing.

Former principal Gwen Goffner took a new position in JCPS human resources as a recruitment and staffing specialist.

Central High: Raymond Green, who had been an assistant principal at Meyzeek, takes over for Dan Withers, who retired.

Doss High: Marty Pollio, who spent eight years as principal of Jeffersontown High, was named the new principal July 1. He takes over for Ken Moeller, who left the school after a state leadership assessment determined he did not have the capacity to continue the school's turnaround efforts

Engelhard Elementary: Ryan McCoy, who had been an assistant principal at Blake, takes over for Teresa Meyer, who retired.

Hite Elementary: Sheri Matter, who had been the assistant principal at Hite this year, takes over for Tim Hagan, who retired.

Kerrick Elementary: LaWanda Hazard-Irvin, who had been the assistant principal at Kerrick, takes over for Maria Clemons, who left Kerrick to be principal at Maupin Elementary. 

Maupin Elementary: See above. Maria Clemons is the new principal for one of the district's two Schools of Innovation. Maupin is being transformed into a school that will be based on arts and humanities.

Stonestreet Elementary: Donnie Boemker, who had been an assistant principal at Stonestreet, takes over for Barbara Harris, who retired.

Watterson Elementary: Carol Ferry, who was an assistant principal at Laukhauf Elementary, takes over for Vickie Talbot, who retired.

Here is a list of the JCPS principal vacancies, as of Aug. 10:

Jeffersontown High: Marty Pollio was named the new principal of Doss High School on July 1, the search for a new Jeffersontown High principal will begin immediately.
