LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- From serving customers to treating patients, two careers are helping a local woman live the American dream.

Dr. Khairunissa Mohiuddin's story started inside a west Louisville convenience store and, with a lot of hard work, continues at a medical facility on the other end of town.

With the start of flu season, Mohiuddin, like most healthcare providers, is busy seeing patients these days. But she said it's a dream come true.

"I grew up in India, I finished my high school there and moved to the U.S.," said Mohiuddin.

After making the move, Mohiuddin worked her way through college in a family-owned convenience store in west Louisville.

"We started with our first store on 26th and Garland," she said.

From waiting on customers to treating patients, as the primary care provider at UofL Health on Outer Loop, Mohiuddin said it's all a labor of love.

"Serving the community, either it could be just a store or the health care we are bringing, giving back to the community," she said.

Jaira Sandusky has been going to the Outer Loop clinic for a year, and said her search for a primary care physician ended after meeting Mohiuddin.

"When you turn 18, they kind of kick you out of pediatrics and everything, and I'm 21 now so I was going through doctors and doctors and doctors and none of them seemed to really care," said Sandusky. "And then I came here and she's like, well, we do a follow up every single, you know, four to six weeks. I want to see you come back, like, different things like that. And she's a really big, I feel like, mental health advocate."

Despite her medical practice, Mohiuddin now owns four local convenience stores and has some advice to give anyone else pursuing the American dream.

"Don't look at all the challenges that will come. Everything will have a challenge," she said. "We all have to overcome it. But keep your goal, like I said, as the top priority."

In addition to taking care of customers and patients, Mohiuddin also works as an adjunct professor.
