Major renovations in store for New Albany Kroger

Grocery shopping in New Albany will soon get a little easier.

Construction at the State Street Kroger started recently, but in about a year's time, it will nearly double its size and nearly double the number of employees. It will go from 68,900 square feet to 125,000 square feet.

“We're going to add nearly 160 jobs,” Kroger store leader Mark Zoll said.

Zoll says Kroger is now hiring.

The building hasn't been updated in 23 years. It’s getting a $20 million facelift, and it’s adding services to make it a “one-stop-shop.”

“I think it needs it,” shopper Chloe Franklin said.

“It could definitely use an upgrade,” shopper Madison Foster said.

“It's called the Marketplace concept," Zoll said. "We will be the first store this far south in southern Indiana to have a marketplace."

Zoll adds it will be one of only a few stores with a Murray’s Cheese Shop from New York City.

The marketplace concept includes everything from clothing to home goods to a Starbucks and bistro with free WiFi.

“We are going to have a health care facility called Little Clinic,” Zoll said.

The Little Clinic is a clinic with nurse practitioners where you can get a prescription and go to the updated pharmacy with a double drive-thru to fill that prescription.

Kroger conveniences that already exist, like the gas station, will be amplified.

“The fuel center is going from a five pump to a nine pump dispenser system,” Zoll said.

The biggest convenience of all, Zoll says, is you won't have to leave your car with the new ClickList program.

ClickList is something that’s been a success at other Kroger locations.

“Customers can complete their orders online, and then we have associates here in the store that will pick that order for them, and then when they come to pick up their order, we walk (it) out to their car, they pay for it, and then they're on their way,” Zoll said.

The construction is expected to be completed in late-summer or early fall of 2017.
