Man weighing 570 lbs. finishes 5K race in Kansas City

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A 570-pound man has completed a 5K race.

Derek Mitchell finished the race because he says he is on the path for a better life. Five years ago, he was diagnosed with a benign tumor on his pituitary gland which contributed to his size.

He used to weigh 625 pounds, but made it a New Year's resolution to drop extra pounds.

Mitchell finished the race with one of his friends cheering him on -- and some inspirational music.

"I think it's called 'Gonna Fly Now' from the movie Rocky, where he is running up the stairs," he said. "You know, that started playing while I was approaching the finish line, and I wanted to cross the finish line with my hands in the air, because that's how it felt. It was pretty awesome."

Mitchell says if he can do a 5K, then anyone can. His finish time was about 90 minutes.

He plans on running nine more races this year -- and to knock five minutes off his time each race.
