Many in Louisville area soak up the sun during Memorial Day

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) – Families flocked outside to enjoy the sunshine and hot temperatures for Memorial Day.

Bike riding through Cherokee Park was a popular activity. Many also decided to play a round of golf. “It’s a day off, so we’re out here getting to enjoy the outdoors and have some fun playing golf,” said Ted Cable.

He came with his friend Larry to spend the afternoon at Seneca Golf Course. They were prepared with hats, sunglasses, and plenty of water. And Cable said it’s easy to stay cool when you’re riding on a golf cart instead of walking.

Joyce and Bill Striegel opted to play golf earlier in the morning to beat the heat. They also decided to play nine holes instead of 18. That way, the couple said, they could go home to be with family and friends and enjoy the real meaning of the holiday.

“To honor our troops,” said Bill Striegel. “What they have suffered and what they have given up for us.”

Other families went straight for the water to keep cool. People packed Waterfront Park for bike rides, grilling, napping and playing in the splash pad.

With the heat and humidity, parents kept plenty of sunscreen and water on hand for the kids. Cindy Joyner brought her niece and nephews to play in the water. And she said they made sure to prepare for the weather.

“We have a large bowl full of cold watermelon and pineapples and cold water and ice packs. So if we see anyone doing this,” Joyner said as she fanned herself, “then we’re prepared!”
