BARDSTOWN, Ky. (WDRB) -- The newest member of the Bardstown Fire Department has spots and enjoys a good tummy rub.
Oreo the Dalmation attracted quite a crowd Friday as she was introduced as the department's mascot. Officers hope she has what it takes to be a social media darling.
The energetic puppy bounced around the firehouse grounds as local children gathered to pet and play with her. Local elementary students came up with the name for Oreo, who is believed to be the first fire dog in the department's more than 100-year history.
Bardstown Fire Chief Billy Mattingly said her unique markings made her stand out from the rest of her litter, and that's one reason they chose her.
"Dalmations are a tradition in fire service, so we wanted to go with that for now and thought it'd be a good morale boost for the department itself, good morale boost hopefully for the city of Bardstown," he said.
The fire chief was so passionate about getting a mascot that he paid for her out of his own pocket. He said visitors are welcome to stop by the department any time to see Oreo. She'll also be at public events, starting with a concert in Bardstown next week.
