Owner of Haymarket Whiskey Bar files lawsuit against people accusing him of sexual assault

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The owner of Haymarket Whiskey Bar in NuLu has filed a lawsuit against the people who accused him of rape on Facebook.

Matthew Landan's lawyer said a person posted a picture of Landan on Facebook on Nov. 13, saying, "Matthew Landan is a rapist."

"Its to make a statement that he's fighting back against the allegations, and he denies all the allegations," said Landan's attorney, Andrew Horne.

Court papers say the person made false claims that other women were contacting her that they had been raped too. The lawsuit continues, saying that after the Facebook post, several other people made false claims about Landan.

The lawsuit also names two former employees, Eric Snider and Christopher Maggio, as the two men who staged a walk out of employees shortly after the allegations surfaced.

Landan claims that after the walk out occurred Snider and Maggio "attempted a low ball purchase offer" for the bar.

Horne said he believes there a possibility that the Facebook page where the first allegation was made could be a fake.

"It's either a fraudulent page or a fake name," Horne said. "He doesn't recognize that name or the person in the pictures."

WDRB reached out to all defendants named in the lawsuit. They declined to comment or didn't not immediately respond. A lawsuit represents only one side of the story. Landan has not been charged criminally.

The bar reopened Wednesday night after abruptly closing earlier this month. An LMPD officer was stationed outside.
