LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- U.S. Senator Rand Paul's trip to Russia included a meeting with former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev.
The two met on Tuesday to discuss ways to decrease tensions between the United States and Russia.
In a statement, Senator Paul said Gorbachev offers historical insight to the current relations between our countries.
"President Gorbachev was instrumental in bringing down the Iron Curtain and restoring ties with the West, and he knows firsthand the critical necessity of engagement. Our conversation further encouraged me that open dialogue between our two nations does not have to be a thing of the past. While our discussion focused on various items, the importance of nuclear disarmament was greatly discussed," said Sen. Paul.
The Kentucky Republican arrived in Moscow on Monday. He is meeting with Russian lawmakers and others to talk about how to prevent escalation of tensions.
