JASPER, Ind. (WDRB) -- Schnitzelbank Restaurant may be the only obvious way to see Jasper's heritage without opening a book.

"This is kind of like a staple of our community," said employee, Jodie Anderson

The small, south central Indiana town of over 15 thousand is proud of its German background.

A reminder of that comes every time a customer is greeted authentically by language and outfit at the restaurant.

Sometimes they're regulars who make the eatery part of the weekly routine.

Sometimes they're tourists who have made this their destination-- since the Hanselman family opened it in the 60s.

"(For) everybody that comes to town, this is the place to eat," Anderson said.

Take one look at the menu and you'll understand why.

"There are so many varieties of German food on the menu that you can pick from," she added.

From appetizers like sauerkraut balls to homemade potato pancakes to a signature entree like Weinerschintzel-- it's hard not to be pleased.

That feeling continues when you see how beer at Schnitzelbank is served.

Just like the cult classic, "Beer Fest," every ounce of frothy goodness on draft is offered out of "Das Boot."

"I've seen somebody drink two boots. Now, whether they walked out of here or not, I don't know," Anderson said with a smile.

Schnitzelbank is an authentic slice of Germany in the middle of Indiana that will leave you saying "that's good" or maybe "das ist gut," like the Germans.
