2018 USA BMX Derby City Cup returns to Louisville's E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Some of the best BMX races in the country are in east Louisville for their shot at future Olympic Gold.

More than 1,500 riders are spending the weekend at E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park for the 2018 USA BMX Derby City Cup.

The park is known to have one of the best BMX tracks in the country.

This weekend's event is for amateurs, professionals and former Olympians who are taking their shot at qualifying for Tokyo 2020.

Three men and two women could be sent to the games if they score enough points on the tracks.

"It's a three-day national, so it's one of the most important as our series winds down," said Gork, creative director for the races. "All our number one titles are coming down to the wire, so winning at this race is a pretty big deal. Pretty important."

Saturday also marked the beginning of trials around the world for countries wanting to make the Olympic team.

Races start again at 8 a.m. Sunday.
