Murder suspect hospitalized

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) - A Clark County, Ind., jury has convicted a 44-year-old man of murdering a woman he met at a strip club.

On Friday afternoon, Ronald Shewmaker was found guilty of killing 32-year-old Lisa McQuirt.

McQuirt was shot and killed outside of a duplex in Clarksville, Ind., in Feb. 2013. Family members say McQuirt met Shewmaker at the Bottoms Up strip club in Louisville.

After Shewmaker bought a Dodge Charger for McQuirt, her family says things turned ugly. They say Shewmaker began following and threatening her. With her estranged husband and father of their children in prison, friends and family members say McQuirt worked hard to support their five children.

Police say McQuirt was shot at least four times, but managed to make it back inside the duplex before she died. The Dodge Charger was found at the crime scene with four slashed tires.

Police arrested Shewmaker at his home in Corydon, Ind., a few days after McQuirt was killed. They also recovered the gun they believe he used to kill her.

"If he so-called 'loved' her, why would he do that?" asked Tina Smith, a friend of McQuirt's. "Why can't people just talk, you know? Why do they have to go up to somebody and just kill them, take their life and take them away from family and their kids? I don't understand.

McQuirt's family says Shewmaker became jealous before the murder, breaking a window on the car and slashing the vehicle's tires.

Shewmaker could be sentenced to as many as 65 years in prison. Sentencing is scheduled for Dec. 2.
