1-year-old girl accidentally hit and killed by her mother in southwest Louisville

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A 1-year-old child was hit and killed Tuesday night by a car in Valley Station.

It happened at a home near the corner of Ashby Lane and Rancho Drive, which is west of Dixie Highway in southwest Louisville, around 5:15 p.m.

LMPD Spokeswoman Alicia Smiley said a mother left her 18-month-old daughter and 3-year-old child in the house to go outside a move the car. When the mother began backing out of the driveway she heard a scream, Smiley said.

The mother got out of the car to find the 1-year-old girl had come out of the house and into the driveway. The 3-year-old was still inside the home.

LMPD officers blocked streets to rush the 1-year-old child to Norton Children's Hospital, where she later died.

After a preliminary investigation, officers will file no charges, Smiley said.

Officers took pictures of the scene Tuesday night as heartbroken neighbors watched.

"I was praying for her to be OK, and when I heard that she didn't make it, my heart dropped," said Hallie Heath, who lives nearby. "I'm pretty sure this is just an accident. Like accidents sometimes happen, and, like, I think they're good people, and they're not bad at all."

Neighbors say they'll continue to pray for the family that's now changed forever.
