POV | Bill Lamb

Mike Pompeo, the current CIA Director, is a substantial, impressive individual who President Donald Trump has nominated for U.S. Secretary of State. Should he be confirmed? Se. Rand Paul isn't so sure, so let's look at his background.

Pompeo is a former three-term U.S. Congressman from Kansas who became the current director of the Central Intelligence Agency. Pompeo attended the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and spent five years in active service. After graduating from Harvard Law School, he ran two businesses in Kansas before earning election to the House of Representatives in 2010. That is really an outstanding resume. He would be a highly qualified, very experienced secretary of state, and I applaud President Trump for nominating him.

Which brings us to Paul. Paul gets more attention in the media than a junior senator normally would because he is a contrarian, and let's be honest, a very quirky guy. Despite President Trump's wishes, and despite Pompeo's impressive credentials, Paul is likely to vote against Pompeo for secretary of state, which might be enough to block his confirmation. That would be a mistake. The senator should get in line with the president and his party on this one.  If he has to be obstinate, I suggest he wait to oppose a less qualified nominee. Trust me; there will be more, but Pompeo isn't one of them.

I'm Bill Lamb and that's my Point of View.
