Melissa Mortenson is a married mother of three who is also a full-time blogger. She lives in Louisville, Kentucky but grew up in Salt Lake City, Utah where she learned to sew. She is a trained fabric designer who initially studied molecular biology and worked in IT for an insurance company.
After the birth of her children kids, she picked up sewing again and started the DIY blog in 2007. She discovered a love for designing and sharing projects with others. Her blog focuses on her four true loves: family, sewing, DIY projects and travel.
In 2014, Mortenson published her first book. "Project Teen: 21 Handmade Gifts your Teens will Love". It was inspired by her children and her desire to continue to sew for them as they grew up. In 2015, she released her first line of quilting quality cottons with Riley Blake Designs. Inspired by Louisville, the fabric line is called "Derby Style."
