LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- With school starting back up, kids all around Kentuckiana are getting back into their school sleep routine.

Norton Children's Sleep Medicine Doctor Emily Singer joined WDRB Mornings on Wednesday to tell us why it's so important for children to get a good night's sleep.

Every kid, no matter the age, needs a bedtime routine to help them go to sleep and stay asleep.

Singer said that getting good quality sleep can help kids learn more and stay focus in school, as well as set them up for the day.

"One way to help get into a good routine is having the same pattern every single night," Singer said. "Winding off of screens, reading, music, get creative!"

Singer recommended that younger kids in elementary school need around 10 hours of sleep per night, while teenagers need around nine hours.

Contrary to popular belief, taking naps after school is not recommended.

"Taking a nap after school relieves all that pressure to sleep," Singer said. "Get your kids up and active after school, so they will have an easier time going to bed later on."

Singer said routines should take around two weeks for kids to get used to. If your child is experiencing restlessness, snoring, or sleeping in class, you should contact your pediatrician for help.
