LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Louisville's health department shut down six local pools Thursday after water samples tested positive for bacteria.

The listed pools that were closed are:

  • The Landings
  • Crowne at Summit Apartments
  • Asbury Park
  • Bridgepoint Swim & Tennis Club pool and wading pool
  • Wolf Creek pool
  • Sutherland pool and wading pool

Kathy Turner, a spokesperson for the Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness, said those pools tested positive for bacteria that can cause illnesses like vomiting, diarrhea, skin infections, ear or eye infections.

The pools will remain closed until they receive a negative water sample that is absent of bacteria. As of 11:30 a.m. Friday, Bridgepoint Swim and Tennis Club has reopened its pool.

According to the health department's website, water samples are collected weekly from every public swimming pool — about 500 pools — in Jefferson County as part of routine inspections.

Cindy Lynn, manager at Wolf Creek Pool, said the department didn't tell her the exact levels of bacteria present in the pool, just that there had been two readings that were "higher than what they should be."

Lynn said "not one person" that she knows of has shown signs of the symptoms Turner described. She's not sure how the bacteria entered her pool, either.

"We've had swim practices every morning," she said. "No one has said a word about any of it."

As dangerous summer heat has settled over Louisville this week, the closures are leaving pool guests more than disappointed. Barbara Price was headed for a pool day Thursday afternoon with her grandchildren when she came face to face with the "closed" sign.

"It's always been a wonderful, clean, great pool for our neighborhood and great for the kids," Price said. "Everybody's sweet. It's really been an asset to our neighborhood."

The health department has more on pool safety and inspections on its website. People can also view the latest inspection report of their favorite pool, spray ground or water park in Jefferson County here.
