LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A local daycare worker has been arrested after police say she criminally abused a child under 12 years of age.

According to an arrest report, police were called to a daycare center in the 2800 block of Crums Lane, near the Shawnee Expressway late Friday afternoon.

Police say a parent told them she had dropped a child off at the daycare earlier in the day, and as she was leaving, she saw one of the daycare workers strike the child.

When she returned to collect her child, police say CPS had already been notified of the incident by an employee of the daycare.

Police say the daycare worker -- 63-year-old Vernice M. Anition -- could be seen on surveillance video slapping her hand on the table in front of the boy. When the boy threw a rag at her, she allegedly placed a hand on the side of the boy's face while she struck him on the opposite side of his face with her other hand.

Police say the child was taken to Kosair Children's Hospital for treatment.

Anition was arrested and charged with second degree criminal abuse of a child under 12 years of age.
