LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- More than 100 people received a gift tonight, something we all use in our daily lives.
As most of us start thinking about Thanksgiving, hundreds of people in our community are left wondering where they'll sleep tonight. But now they have something that will help get them on their feet.
It's something many of us take for granted, getting a brand new pair of shoes.
For people like Michael Miller it's a gracious gift.
Miller says, "I just got released from jail and it's a blessing to even have someone come up and give us shoes."
He arrived at the Healing Place three days ago, just in time for their annual shoe giveaway.
Miller says, "We were all talking about shoes earlier today how we needed shoes, boots it's amazing how the lord works."
Dr. George Quill fitted 120 homeless men and women for shoes. The local orthopedic surgeon has been part of this program for seven years.
Dr. Quill says, "The foot is such a neglected part of their medical history they can't be out there beating the streets working through the recovery process without a good pair of shoes."
Walking in these shoes is both a physical and emotional journey.
Some straight out of jail, others off the streets.
Miller says, "Some people don't know what it is to have a life on the streets and they don't get gifts like this for people who live in shelters this is a blessing."
For many of these people, it's their only gift this year.
Redwing Footwear and Guess donated all the shoes. The program 'Our Hearts to your Soles' is a national campaign going on 33 different states this holiday season.
