Annual 'Out of the Darkness Walk' at Waterfront Park honors loved ones lost to suicide

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Family members gathered at Waterfront Park on Saturday to walk for loved ones they've lost.

It's part of the Out of the Darkness Walk put on by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. This is the seventh year for the event in Louisville.

Organizers say every year, in any given community, there are three times as many suicides as homicides and they're highly preventable.

Those who walked say it's not easy, but it's necessary.

"I posted on my Facebook, maybe I can help somebody that is thinking about committing suicide, is depressed ... just needs help," said Suzanne Severs, who's brother committed suicide. "If you can just help one person, then that's one family that doesn't have to go through what my family has gone through."

Organizers say they raised $90,000 online before today's event.

That money goes to programs to help with suicide awareness and prevention.
