Bardstown police say suspect killed himself during chase

BARDSTOWN, Ky. (WDRB) -- Police in Bardstown say a suspect fatally shot himself after an incident involving his ex-girlfriend.

According to police, the man -- now identified as 29-year-old Tyran Jenkins -- had been following his ex-girlfriend in a vehicle a little before 9 o'clock Friday morning. She called police, who then began following the suspect on Bloomfield Road.

"We received a 911 call from the victim at about 8:54 this morning, stating that she was being chased through the city by the suspect," said Bardstown Police Chief Steve Uram.

That's when Uram says officers began following both cars. He says the chase continued through town, and the suspect bumped the woman's car with his car. When the chase reached the intersection of Bloomfield Road and Stephen Foster, police say they heard a gunshot from the suspect's vehicle while it was still moving. The suspect's car then crashed into a golf course on Stephen Foster Road.

"Officers stayed back because we knew he was armed," Uram said. "We did fire less lethal bean bag rounds from a 12-gauge shotgun into the car, trying to get a response from anybody in the car. When there was no response, we approached the car and found the suspect dead in the front seat."

John Gilbert witnessed part of the chase and the fatal ending.

"I was on my way to work," Gilbert said. "I see all the police cars coming by."

Jenkins' ex-girlfriend had taken out an emergency protective order against the man Thursday night, but it had not yet been served.
