Dentist arrested after raid at office on Preston Highway

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Police arrested a dentist after raiding the Louisville Dream Dentistry office on Preston Highway on Thursday morning.

Investigators from LMPD Narcotics, the DEA, Kentucky State Police and the Inspector General's office took part in the Aug. 16 raid.

According to court documents, police arrested 54-year-old Thomas Tyre after investigators seized a substantial quantity of controlled substances and three firearms from the practice.

Police say the drugs were being used to treat patients, even though they had expired.

According to the arrest report, the narcotics were "kept without log, record or inventory throughout the practice, either in an unlocked gun safe with firearms and ammunition or in other areas accessible to patients and staff."

Investigators say he also wrote prescriptions to patients for controlled substances "and directed patients unlawfully to return" the drugs to him. Police say Tyre also told them he intended to prescribe Demerol for a "purpose outside the scope of his medical practice."

WDRB News spotted Tyre leaving his home, which is attached to the dental practice, but he declined to stop for an interview. The door to Louisville Dream Dentistry was open Friday morning, but a person inside said they were not seeing patients.

Tyre is facing three charges of illegally dispensing, prescribing or administering controlled substances. He is scheduled for an arraignment on Aug. 20.
