LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Hundreds of people today laced up their shoes to help those fighting a debilitating disease.

The Kentucky Chapter of the Huntington's Disease Society of America hosted the Team Hope Walk Sunday afternoon at Waterfront Park.

Huntington's disease is a fatal genetic disorder that causes a breakdown of nerve cells in the brain, affecting physical and mental abilities.

There is no cure.

"This disease only affects one in 36,000 individuals in our country so it is devastating," said Courtney Bennett, with the Huntington's Disease Society of America.

The Team Hope walk takes places in 100 cities across the country, and has raised more than $28 million since starting in 2007.

All the proceeds from Sunday's walk go to improve the lives of people affected by the disease and their families.
