LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A 14-year-old girl died Sunday evening in a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 265 in New Albany, Indiana.
New Albany Police Chief Todd Bailey said emergency crews were dispatched at 6 p.m. to a crash involving two vehicles on eastbound I-265 near the State Street interchange.
According to investigators, officials first received reports of metal rods and fencing scattered across the eastbound lanes. Shortly afterward, emergency dispatchers were notified of a crash in the same area.
Investigators said a silver 2023 Ford Explorer carrying four people had stopped in the right lane because traffic had backed up due to the debris. As the driver attempted to merge into the left lane, the SUV was struck from behind by a 2005 Ford F-350.
A 14-year-old rear-seat passenger in the Explorer suffered fatal injuries.
The Jefferson County Coroner's Office identified the victim as Abigail Garber of Fort Wayne, Indiana.
Another rear-seat passenger, a 16-year-old, was taken to Norton Children's Hospital in Louisville with serious injuries.
Two others were transported to UofL Hospital with injuries investigators believe are not life-threatening.
Eastbound I-265 remained closed for about three hours while emergency crews responded and investigators documented the scene.
Indiana State Police said no charges have been filed, and the investigation remains ongoing.
