LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Three people are dead after a crash involving three vehicles in Breckinridge County Friday afternoon.

It happened just before 3:30 p.m., according to a news release from Kentucky State Police. That's when KSP Post 4 responded to a call for assistance from the Breckinridge County Sheriff’s Office on reports of a crash near the intersection of KY 86 and 690 in Custer.

According to investigators, 59-year-old Charles Lucas of Irvington was driving a 2013 Toyota pickup truck westbound on KY 86 "when, for unknown reasons, he crossed into the path of a 2009 Ford Escape traveling eastbound" that was being driven by Kenneth Smallwood, 37, of Harned.

Lucas was taken to Baptist Health Hardin, where he died, according to the release.

Smallwood and a passenger in Lucas' vehicle -- 55-year-old Edna Lucas of Irvington -- were pronounced dead at the scene. A 3-year-old passenger in Smallwood's vehicle was not injured.

Part of KY 86 was closed for several hours while troopers investigated and cleared the scene.

The crash remains under investigation.
