LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Amazon's brand new 141,000-square-foot delivery station just off Interstate 264 in Louisville opened just a couple months ago, all in anticipation for the Cyber Monday rush.
On Monday morning, nearly 100 people were inside busy sorting and stacking the thousands of packages that will soon go from the facility to the trucks to doorsteps around town.
"It serves as our Super Bowl. We have been gearing up since Jan. 1," Amazon spokesman Andre Woodson said. "We have customers purchasing toys, electronics, kitchen, home, office supplies, and we will fulfill all those orders specifically delivered from this Louisville delivery station."
This Louisville facility — just off Preston Highway — is Amazon's newest in the entire country. Outside is a line of delivery trucks ready to go. As soon as one is loaded and leaves, another pulls in. Then it, too, is off in a matter of minutes.
"This is our last mile of our fulfillment process," Woodson said. "So once we receive those orders, they will eventually come to this delivery station, and anyone in the greater Louisville area will receive a package from this facility."
Monday was a rare look inside the largest company in the world on its busiest day.
"It's pretty unique to see how many different items are being touched, physically, and then how that is being processed through this new facility," Woodson said.
Cyber Monday is a term that was coined in 2005 by the National Retail Federation with a goal of most people getting their purchased items in time for Christmas. According to Adobe Analytics, Cyber Monday brought in $11.3 billion last year. This year is expected to top that — not because more people are shopping but because retail prices are increasing.
"Last year, hundreds of millions of orders were placed on our website," Woodson said. "And, this year, we are expecting to have millions of orders placed again."
If you want to work for Amazon, the company is hiring about 5,000 people in the state of Kentucky. Starting pay about $20.50 an hour.
