LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A Kentucky State Police K-9 won big at a national competition.
Kentucky State Police K-9 Cam and his handle Det. John Sims received three awards at the Paw 4 Law Foundation's seventh annual Murrieta Police K-9 Trials in California. A total of 40 teams competed from across the nation in trials covering multiple disciplines like agility, obedience, patrol, narcotics detection and more.
The 3-year-old black lab placed first in the electronics detection building search, second in the electronics detection parcel search and third in the electronics detection vehicle search.
"The Kentucky State Police has a long history of excellence and innovation," Gov. Beshear said in a news release. "Cam and Detective Sims’ recognition through these awards shows not only that KSP is still among the best state law enforcement agencies in the nation, but also that we are on the cutting edge of technological advancement."
The team is assigned to the Electronic Crime Branch and works with the Internet Crimes Against Children taskforce.
"This was the first competition Cam and I attended, and I was excited to be able to compete alongside my partner," Sims said in a news release. "I am thankful and honored to represent the KSP Electronic Crime Branch."
Cam joined KSP in 2022. Cam also serves as a therapy and comfort dog.
