LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Kentucky hunters donated a record number of deer to provide thousands of meals for food banks and shelters across the state last year.
According to a news release, hunters donated more than 3,000 deer, which yielded 116,764 pounds of venison. That created 467,000 servings of ground venison.
It's the highest total ever for the Kentucky Hunters for the Hungry program, which works to fight hunger by "facilitating the processing, packaging and delivery of healthful ground venison meat" for those in need.
The program also produced about 60,000 protein sticks that went to school backpack programs in several counties last year to make sure kids have protein snacks.
Monetary donations helped pay for the processing of the meat, which is done by participating processors who get the donated deer during the fall hunting season. The processed venison burger packages are then frozen so they can be transported and cooked.
The nonprofit said it takes cash donations throughout the year, and gets funding from the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife.Â
