LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) – After sitting vacant for more than a decade, the Rosewell estate in eastern Jefferson County is going up for sale.
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, which purchased the house for $1.6 million in 2005, will hold a series of open houses starting Aug. 11 and open bids on the property Oct. 3, according to a news release.
Kentucky agreed to buy Rosewell in an effort to protect historic properties near the Ohio River Bridges Project, promising to add a preservation easement before eventually selling the house. It’s one of three sites the state acquired for the project – a total of $13.5 million in real estate costs.
None of the properties has been re-sold. The state twice has failed to sell the Grocers Ice and Cold Storage building on E. Main Street downtown; no offers were submitted at a bid opening in June.
Kentucky is requiring bids of at least $1 million for Rosewell, which is protected by the easement limiting how the property can be used. For example, some routine work such as painting and installing a satellite dish requires advance approval from state preservation officials.
In all, the state is selling 5.8 acres that take in the Greek Revival mansion and nearby land without preservation restrictions. Rosewell, which dates to the 1820s, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and includes six bedrooms and four bathrooms.
The property sits not far from a new bridge that will connect Prospect, Ky., and Utica, Ind.
