LOUISVILLE, KY. (WDRB) -- One man's garbage is not necessarily another man's treasure for some west Louisville neighbors. That's why Louisville Metro Council is taking steps to stop illegal dumping there.
"It was like the city dump," says Nancy Falls, a west Louisville resident. Falls takes a lot of pride in her home on Hale Avenue. "This is not where you come and dump your trash."
But lately she has been fighting an uphill battle to keep her property clean. "I look out there and I see this guy with his truck dumping his garbage there, and it was frustrating."
And the frustration is everywhere. Some of the alleyways in west Louisville are full of old tires, abandoned furniture and all kinds of other trash.
"It has been going on for years; it's not a new issue but it's an issue that the council has taken some real leadership in addressing," says Councilwoman Attica Scott.
Signs have been posted warning people there will be fines for dumping, but it's not working. That's why metro council is now working on another solution involving video cameras.
"We passed an ordinance that's going to make illegal dumping penalties even harsher," says Councilwoman Scott. She says they're done talking trash and the cameras will help them crackdown on illegal dumpers.
"We can catch people in the act. We can capture your driver's license or your license plate and find out who you are."
After years of calling to complain, Falls is glad something is being done. She says the trash is starting to attract the wrong crowd. "Oh, they were terrible. You could just... nothing for you to walk out in your yard and see possum. Even my neighbor that had a car in the yard... a possum made a home there."
Metro council plans to have the video cameras in place in the near future.
