China and the US have long collaborated in 'open research.' Some in Congress say that must change

WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. lawmakers and national security officials are increasingly alarmed that long-standing research ties between the U.S. and China could give China an advantage when it comes to developing new military technology. Members of Congress say China has exploited American colleges and universities. They have proposed new rules to restrict federally funded research partnerships with universities in China that also work with the Chinese military. They've also expressed concerns that U.S. universities could be targeted by foreign spies eager to steal research secrets, highlighting the need for greater cybersecurity measures.

Crypto spent millions to defeat Sherrod Brown and elect allies. It's ready for a repeat in 2026

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — The cryptocurrency industry spent millions last year to unseat a longtime critic, Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown in Ohio, and install its allies in Washington. It’s ready for a repeat in 2026 and may once more target Brown, who’s making a comeback bid. Democrats are hopeful about Brown's chances to return to the Senate, especially without Donald Trump at the top of the ballot. But crypto interests have even more to spend this time. And the industry has seen the Republican-controlled Congress turn in its favor now that Brown no longer heads the Senate banking committee. But Brown’s approach to crypto sounds different this time.

Is there an AI bubble? Financial institutions sound a warning

LONDON (AP) — Financial institutions are raising concerns about a potential AI investment bubble. The Bank of England on Wednesday warned that tech stock prices, inflated by AI optimism, could face a sharp correction. The IMF echoed these concerns, noting that global stock prices are surging due to high expectations for AI's productivity potential. Experts point to rapid tech stock growth and stretched market valuations as signs of a bubble. While tech leaders like Jeff Bezos and Sam Altman acknowledge some risks, they speak optimistically about AI's long-term benefits.

SpaceX launches the 11th test flight of its mega Starship rocket with another win

SpaceX has launched another of its mammoth Starship rockets on a test flight. The 403-foot Starship thundered into the evening sky Monday from Texas. The booster peeled away and made a controlled entry into the Gulf of Mexico as planned, with the spacecraft skimming space before descending into the Indian Ocean. It's similar to the previous test flight in August, which scored a success following a string of explosive failures. SpaceX's Elon Musk intends to use Starship to send people to Mars. NASA cannot land astronauts on the moon by decade's end without Starship.

UK watchdog targets Google's 'strategic' role in search ads and a competitive market

LONDON (AP) — Britain’s antitrust watchdog is labeling Google a “strategic” player in the online search advertising market, paving the way for regulators to force the company to change its business practices to ensure more competition in that market. The Competition and Markets Authority said Friday that its investigation found that the US tech giant has “strategic market status” because it has “substantial and entrenched market power” in general search and search advertising. It marks the first time the watchdog has issued the designation since new UK digital rules took effect at the start of the year.

One Tech Tip: Annoyed by junk calls to your iPhone? Try the new iOS 26 call screen feature

LONDON (AP) — Apple has introduced a new call screening feature for iPhone users to combat nuisance calls. This tool, part of the iOS 26 update, allows users to screen calls from unknown numbers. To activate it, users must update their iPhones and enable the feature in the Phone app settings. When an unknown caller dials, a Siri-style voice asks for their name and purpose. Users receive a transcription and can choose to answer or send a pre-written message. While some users find it helpful, others report issues with important calls not getting through. Apple is catching up with Google, which already offers a similar feature.

Tesla hit with probe after crashes involving a self-driving feature that Musk has boasted about

NEW YORK (AP) — Federal regulators have opened yet another investigation into Tesla’s so-called full-self driving technology after dozens of incidents in which the electric vehicle maker’s cars ran red lights or drove on the wrong side of the road, sometimes crashing into other vehicles and endangering drivers. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said in a filing dated Tuesday that it has 58 incident reports of Tesla vehicles violating traffic safety laws while operating in full self-driving mode. In reports to regulators, many of the Tesla drivers said the cars gave them no warning about the unexpected behavior. The probe covers 2.9 million vehicles, essentially all Teslas equipped with full self-driving technology

Ferrari reveals features of first fully electric vehicle, but its financial outlook mars the debut

MILAN (AP) — Italian luxury sports carmaker Ferrari raised its 2025 guidance in the face of global 15% tariffs on foreign car imports to the United States as the company unveiled the new powertrain and chassis of its first fully electric production vehicle. Yet the debut of its electric vehicle was marred by the company’s worst trading day since going public in 2016. Industry analysts had expected much greater long-term growth and shares plunged 15% on the Milan Stock Exchange and about the same in New York. Ferrari CEO Benedetto Vigna declined to give target production numbers or a price for the Ferrari Elettrica, which will be delivered beginning late next year.
