UNDATED (AP) — Colorado coach Deion Sanders is back at practice a day undergoing a procedure related to his blood clots. Sanders seems set to coach Saturday when the Buffaloes face No. 22 Iowa State in a Big 12 matchup. His son shared a video of him on the field Wednesday. The elder Sanders discussed the procedure in an earlier video, noting it was his 16th surgery over the last few years. He received support from family and friends, including a visit from longtime NFL cornerback Adam “Pacman” Jones. Sanders has faced blood clot issues before. And last spring, he was diagnosed with bladder cancer.
UNDATED (AP) — The NCAA has approved a single January transfer window in college football. The move will allow coaches with high-stakes postseason games to focus more on matchups than player retention. The Division I Administrative Committee approved the new window of January 2-16 on Wednesday. Bowl subdivision coaches voted unanimously to support the change during their American Football Coaches Association convention earlier this year. The new 15-day period replaces the current 20-day December period. Most teams now will be able to keep active players as they prepare for their biggest games. The NCAA also announced that the head coach change exception for football will now be 15 days.
UNDATED (AP) — The NCAA has moved a step closer to allowing athletes and athletic department staff members to bet on professional sports. The Division I Administrative Committee approved the change on Wednesday. It must still be approved by Division II and III for it to go into effect. If approved by all three divisions, it would go into effect Nov. 1. This doesn’t change the NCAA rule which forbids athletes from betting on college sports. The NCAA also prohibits sharing information about college competitions with bettors. The institution also doesn’t allow advertising and sponsorships of NCAA championships by betting sites.
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — An NCAA committee has proposed allowing sponsor patches on jerseys, potentially starting next year. Currently, only equipment or apparel manufacturer logos are permitted during regular-season games. If approved, schools could add two commercial logos on uniforms and one on equipment during non-championship events. The committee is seeking feedback from NCAA schools and may revise the proposal. A final vote is expected in January, with changes effective August 1 if adopted. The committee is also considering changes for commercial logos on playing surfaces and officials’ uniforms during non-championship events.
UNDATED (AP) — The College Sports Commission has launched a tip line that allows for anonymous reporting of potential violations of new rules in the name, image and likeness era that outline how players are paid, place limits on roster sizes and set a $20.5 million cap on revenue sharing. Commission CEO Bryan Seeley says this reporting line was always planned and isn't a reaction to the agency's struggles since its July 1 opening. Some school administrators have complained about delays in processing deals. Seeley acknowledges some deals require more scrutiny, which takes time, but says most are cleared quickly.
UNDATED (AP) — Penn State's recent loss to UCLA has sparked discussions about college football teams traveling across the country. Coach James Franklin cited the long trip as a factor in their defeat. In Big Ten games this season, teams playing three time zones away are 4-2. Penn State has lost both at home and away. In the ACC, the visiting team is 2-2. This week, four Big Ten games involve long-distance travel, including Michigan's game at Southern California. Coach Sherrone Moore emphasized the need to adapt to travel challenges.
UNDATED (AP) — No. 7 Indiana's visit to No. 3 Oregon is the top college football game in the country in Week 7. No. 8 Alabama's trip to No. 14 Missouri and No. 1 Ohio State's game at No. 17 Illinois are the other two Top 25 matchups. It's also Red River Rivalry week. The Oklahoma-Texas game has lost some of its luster because of the Longhorns' fall from No. 1 in the preseason to out of the rankings and quarterback issues for both teams. North Texas hosts No. 24 South Florida in a key American Conference game.
