BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Had No. 3 LSU been lighting up the scoreboard in its first three victories, a match-up with Southeastern Louisiana might have been an opportune time to rest offensive starters such as quarterback Garrett Nussmeier. Instead, Nussmeier and Co. will try to demonstrate they can execute better than they have in their past two games. In a 20-10 victory over Florida last week, LSU scored one offensive touchdown. They scored just two in a 23-7 victory on Sept. 6 over Louisiana Tech. LSU coach Brian Kelly says Nussmeier has been limited early this season by a summer torso injury. But Kelly says this week's game presents an opportunity for the QB to work on his game as his condition continues to improve.
UNDATED (AP) — Auburn faces Oklahoma in the only ranked SEC matchup this week. Both teams are undefeated. Auburn recently entered the AP Top 25 after wins over Baylor and Ball State. Oklahoma's rise in the rankings follows a win over Michigan. Oklahoma's John Mateer is second in the nation in total offense. Auburn's Jackson Arnold, a former Oklahoma player, is also performing well. In another game, South Carolina plays Missouri. South Carolina's quarterback situation is uncertain after an injury to LaNorris Sellers. Missouri's Beau Pribula has been impressive, throwing for 791 yards and seven touchdowns.
MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Miami is unbeaten and ranked No. 4 in the country, with Heisman Trophy frontrunner Carson Beck leading the way. They recently achieved their biggest victory margin over a ranked opponent since 2001. Florida, on the other hand, is struggling at 1-2 and facing a top-5 team for the second straight week. Hurricanes coach Mario Cristobal emphasizes respecting Florida’s talent and challenges. The Gators aim to avoid their first 1-3 start since 1986. Miami leads the series 30-27 and has won eight of the last 10 meetings. The game is expected to be intense, with both teams eager to prove themselves.
GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) — Former South Carolina quarterback Connor Shaw is in stable condition after collapsing while coaching his son’s flag football team. The City of Simpsonville says Shaw was coaching at Gracely Park on Wednesday when the incident occurred about 15 minutes into the game. Emergency services took the 33-year-old Shaw to Prisma Health Greenville Memorial Hospital. The City of Simpsonville confirmed his stable condition on Thursday morning. Shaw was South Carolina’s starting quarterback from 2011 to 2013 and was inducted into the school's athletics Hall of Fame in 2021. The city expressed support for Shaw and his family.
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Texas has a chance this week to cure whatever ails Arch Manning. The Longhorns host winless Sam Houston in their last non-conference game before the start of SEC play on Oct. 4 against Florida. By any measure, the Bearkats look undersized and overmatched and having surrendered at least 37 points in every game this season. They look like easy pickings for a quarterback looking to get out of a slump. But the preseason favorite for the Heisman Trophy needs more than a win. He needs confidence, completions and a command of the offense after a rough start to the season.
NORMAN, Okla. (AP) — Jackson Arnold was expected to be a standout quarterback at Oklahoma, following in the footsteps of stars like Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray. However, after struggling with injuries and losing his starting job last season, Arnold transferred to Auburn. The change has been positive, as he has led the Tigers to a 3-0 start. On Saturday, Arnold will return to Oklahoma as Auburn's quarterback. He says he's focused and not distracted by outside noise. Auburn coach Hugh Freeze advises him to concentrate on the team. Oklahoma coach Brent Venables holds no ill will and acknowledges Arnold's success.
