LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The Spencer County Sheriff's Office now has the funds to hire another deputy.
Sheriff Scott Herndon said this will boost the department to nine deputies in all.
He said fiscal court approved the funding this week which added more to the budget to hire and retain officers.
Herndon said with a department this size, every single person makes a big difference.
"A lot of time from the early a.m. morning until the daylight, we were running one guy by himself," Herndon said. "That's just ridiculous and I'm not going to do that anymore. I said, 'If I don't have coverage in the daytime, I'm not going to put guys out there in the nighttime by themselves.'"
Herndon said in total, the department is getting $1.1 million. He was hoping to be able to hire two new deputies but said he's glad to add at least one.
He said the funding will also help with raises and retention.
