LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The first COVID-19 vaccines arrived in Kentucky three years ago Thursday.
Dr. Jason Smith, chief medical officer at University of Louisville Health, was the first person in the state to receive the shot.
Four other frontline health care workers also got the shot on Dec. 14, 2020, marking a notable moment in fighting the COVID-19 pandemic.
Smith said the vaccine has helped drastically reduce the number of COVID patients being treated in the hospital.
"You know, you talk about the difference the vaccine makes in making this a less severe disease in patients, that's the factor that people forget is that three years on, and we're talking about four patients in-house as opposed to 400," he said.
UofL Health has administered more than 170,000 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine to Kentuckians, including booster shots.
