LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Kentucky's first hospital celebrates 200 years of treating patients.

University of Louisville Hospital first admitted patients in 1823, mostly riverboat crew members who were sick or injured.

At that time, the hospital sat at Preston and Chestnut streets.

"I have to say thank you to all of those who are caregivers in this room," Ken Marshall, COO of UofL Health, said during a celebration on Tuesday. "I want you to stand up because we need to thank you most of all."

UofL Hospital is the region's only Level 1 trauma center for adults. It's also part of Kentucky's largest academic health system, with eight hospitals, four medical centers and the Brown Cancer Center.
