Vine Grove home destroyed by fire

What's left of a Vine Grove home that burned to the ground Friday evening.

VINE GROVE, Ky. (WDRB NEWS) -- A Vine Grove family's home was destroyed by a devastating fire just weeks before Christmas.

The family says their wood stove started the massive fire that burned their home to the ground Friday evening. Two days later, smoke was still rising from what's left of the home.

"It was awful," Selena Peak said. "There's nothing you can do but just watch it burn."

The family made it out unharmed, but some of their pets were killed.

"Our little dog ran in, Shadow is what we call him, ran back in and wouldn't come back out," Peak said. "He didn't make it."

16-year-old William Peak did what he could to try to put out the flames.

"I took off and went and got the fire extinguisher and got the water hose but by the time I got back you couldn't see your hand in front of your face down there," He said.

But the smoke was too much and they knew they had to get out.

"We just ran out as quick and we could and then it just took over," Peak said.

All that's left is a shell of a home and the clothes on their backs. They're too proud to ask for help but right now, they need it.

"My parents don't like hand outs at all, ever," Falica Carmichael said. "But they need everything."

As they continue to pick through the rubble they have no choice, but to start to move on.

"Just start over again, that's all we can do," Peak said. "Just start from bottom and work our way back up again I guess."
