JCPS has a budget nearly twice the size of the entire city of Louisville budget.
The JCPS board recently announced that they are cutting that budget by almost $100 million and said the cuts come in part due to the loss of more than $500 million in federal COVID-19 relief funding that had supported salaries, programming and transportation over the last several years. That COVID money was only supposed to be temporary and was intended for a very specific use. Instead, JCPS got addicted to it.
Now, they're talking about raising property taxes to make up for what appears to be their misuse of the COVID dollars. How is that a taxpayer problem?
Here's what our viewers had to say:
"Yes. This thing with the property tax, it's a joke, It's pitiful. And I want to know what can I do about it. I'm ready to fight downtown."
"I agree with Mr. Lamb. The school board needs to definitely find some places to cut."
"Every time the taxes go up, my health payment goes up. They need to budget properly and not pay their superintendent so much money."
"Get a new board, split JCPS in half because it's too big. And they've got too much opportunity to waste our money."
"JCPS asking for a tax increase after not being able to handle a $2 billion budget is absolutely fiduciary malpractice."
"Taxpayers should not keep being a big bank for the JCPS schools, and there needs to be an audit of what the heck's been going on with all this money."
"Find out where the waste is, because they're not good stewardship of our taxpayers money."
"This is beyond comprehension when educated people are so irresponsible with taxpayer's money."
"They will not get another red center of mine. I don't care one way or the other. I'll stop paying my taxes."
