Hawaii library system bans displays that refer to 'Banned Books Week,' rebrands to 'Freedom to Read'
As libraries across the United States observe Banned Books Week, the Hawaii State Public Library System has rebranded it as “Freedom to Read.” The library system is banning any use of the words “censorship” and “banned” as well as the phrase “banned books week" on library displays. They also can't use props and imagery such as caution tape or use slogans or materials from the American Library Association that include facts about book bans. Hawaii library officials say they're trying to cool the temperature of a hot-button issue. One librarian noted the irony of the display guidelines being in effect during a week dedicated to awareness of censorship.
