LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The University of Louisville basketball team has eight regular-season games left after Wednesday’s 94-92 loss at Syracuse. On the latest episode of “Overtime” on WDRB+, Rick Bozich and Eric Crawford talk about how many of those games the Cardinals need to win to claim “progress” from a season ago.
And Crawford broaches the subject of whether any progress is enough where Kenny Payne’s future is concerned, though that will be a larger subject moving forward.
Other topics in the latest edition:
- KENTUCKY GETS GONZAGA: The Wildcats ended their two-game slide at Vanderbilt on Tuesday and come home to play the least imposing Gonzaga team in a decade this weekend. Do you like a non-conference game in the middle of the SEC season?
- LOUISVILLE-NOTRE DAME WOMEN: Louisville’s women host Notre Dame tonight in a meeting of Top 15 women’s teams. Why are the Fighting Irish the No. 1 rival for Jeff Walz and his program, and why is he calling this the “game of the year” for his team?
- SEC-BIG TEN ALLIANCE: The SEC and Big Ten are forming an alliance that they say will advise the NCAA on how to move forward with the changes swirling about major college sports, specifically college football. Is what the commissioners call an alliance actually the next step toward breaking away from the NCAA?
- SUPER BOWL -- PLACE YOUR BETS: For the first time ever, a Super Bowl will take place with gambling on the game legal in the state of Kentucky. As of Wednesday afternoon, 54 percent of the money bet nationally at BetOnline.ag was on the 2-point underdog Kansas City Chiefs. Now get this, 84.5 percent of the money from professional bettors went on the favorite San Francisco 49ers. There are no shortage of options if you’re looking to bet. Other bets: The over/under is 47 ½. You can bet on the game MVP, coin toss outcome, whether the team that calls the toss will be correct, length of Reba McIntyre’s national anthem, color of liquid poured on the winning coach, and an unending list of prop bets.
- DISNEY (ESPN), FOX, WARNER TEAM UP: There will be a new sports streaming service available in 2025 after the announcement that Disney, FOX and Warner will launch a direct-to-consumer service that combines all of ESPN and ABC’s sports offerings with FOX, FS1, TNT and many others. It is estimated that the bundle includes rights to 55 percent of sports offerings in America. What will this mean to sports fans in the U.S.? Or can we know yet?
- TONY ROMO’S BIG MOMENT: The Tony Romo critics are growing. With a Super Bowl broadcast coming, the complaints about the former Cowboys quarterback are mounting. He’s a bit too flip. He fixates on quarterbacks and other stars and knows less about the overall teams. CBS had to do a bit of an intervention over his preparation not too long ago. His unintentional catchphrase, “Ohhhhh I don’t know Jim,” has become a meme. Romo could do no wrong in his early years at CBS, and it seems his style has begun to wear on a lot of viewers, though his enthusiasm and player perspective still appeals to many. It’s a tough job. But he is paid $17 million a year to do it. What do you make of the scrutiny he’s under?
- WHAT WE MISSED: Indiana wins at Ohio State. Nick Saban joins ESPN. Spring training starts next week.
- PARTING SHOTS: Bozich praises of Jeff Walz. Crawford rails about the difficulty of finding streaming games.
