LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A dog is dead, and a Fairdale, Ky. man is accused of abusing and torturing it to death.
The incident happened Sunday at 8:30 p.m. Police say 24-year-old Kenneth Mahoney took his own beagle out of its kennel and a short time later, drove down his driveway with the beagle tied to the bumper of his vehicle by a red cable.
Mahoney's driveway is roughly 100 yards, according to an arrest report.
When Mahoney turned from his driveway, the beagle went flying into a ditch.
Police say a witness saw what happened and scooped up the dog.
"He felt a heartbeat, but the beagle died shortly after," police say.
Mahoney returned about 30 minutes later and asked the witness for his dog. By that time, the witness had called Louisville Metro Animal Services. When the witness asked Mahoney about the beagle, Mahoney allegedly replied, "<<EXPLETIVE>> happens."
Police say Mahoney later admitted to tying the beagle to his bumper, and when he was read his rights, he requested a lawyer.
He was arrested and charged with torture of a dog, tampering with physical evidence and cruelty to animals. Mahoney was scheduled to be arraigned before a judge Tuesday morning, but he posted bond.
