LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Allyson Vitato has been named the principal of the new Norton Commons Elementary School.

Vitato has been the principal at Breckinridge Franklin Elementary School since 2010. She told her staff and a letter was sent home to parents on Monday.

"As an educator, I have been present in the Norton Commons community from the time I was a teacher, when I served as a tutor for a family within Norton Commons when it was first being built," she said. "It is truly an honor to be selected as the first principal at Norton Commons Elementary School."

Vitato said the "unique opportunities that this position offers are very exciting."

"I look forward to developing relationships with the parents, students and community within Norton Commons and the greater area and will work diligently to ensure a successful opening of the school," she said. "This is a school that has great potential, and I look forward to being a part of it's achievements and progress."

In 2015, Vitato was named the latest recipient of the Milken Family Foundation National Educator Award, an award designed to provide public recognition and a financial reward to teachers, principals and other educators who have a proven record of excellence in education.

The honor is only given to one educator in a state each year and about 40 educators nationally.

Construction is continuing on the new elementary school, which will have a capacity of 650 students, although it's only expected to have approximately 400 students when classes begin this fall.

It will be the district's 92nd elementary school and the first new facility to open since Ramsey Middle School opened in 2008.
