Uncle of Fairdale teenager killed in hit-and-run: 'Turn yourself in'

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Over the years, countless pictures have captured the life of Trey Monroe-Royse.

Clutching one of those photos, Jesse Monroe describes his nephew as a jokester, an athlete, and an all-American kid.

“At 15 years old, he had his whole life in front of him and now it’s just been taken away,” said Monroe.

Monroe says his nephew’s life could have involved a career in professional basketball.

Set to join the school's team, the Fairdale High School freshman had a love for the sport, which he shared with his late father. That love is reflected in a memorial set up along Glengarry Drive in the spot where the teenager was killed Friday night while walking with his basketball.

“He walked out the door at 8:40 and the call in around 8:50,” said Monroe.

Trey was hit while walking from home to a friend’s house. Police say the driver kept going. Witnesses describe the vehicle involved as a dark-colored SUV.

"It's a pretty straight shot, so in my opinion, the vehicle had to have been traveling at a high rate of speed,” said Monroe.

Many of Trey's family and friends had just seen him, earlier in the day.

"It was just heartbreaking. He was just here. We didn't know it would be the last time we see him,” said Michelle Vaughn, the mother of Trey’s girlfriend. “I feel so bad for his mom. If it was one of my kids, it’s unbelievable.”

As Trey is mourned and remembered, loved ones say their focus is also on finding out what happened and why.

"They don't want to fess up for the crime they've committed, so they flee and they're cowards,” said Monroe. “Turn yourself in. You've committed a crime. You killed an innocent boy and you left."

A candlelight vigil will be held at 9 p.m. Sunday at the scene on Glengarry Drive.
