LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville Metro Police are investigating after a man was shot and killed near the University of Louisville.
According to a MetroSafe supervisor, the shooting took place just before 12:45 p.m. Saturday, in the 400 block of M Street, near the intersection of Winkler Avenue and South 3rd Street. That's just west of U of L's Belknap Campus.
Alicia Smiley, a spokesperson for LMPD, said responding officers located a man in his 20s who had died from an apparent gunshot wound.Â
The victim was found outside near an alley, according to Smiley, but police are unsure if he was a resident of the area.Â
Â
Neighbors in the area say their community has become so dangerous, they feel caged inside their homes.Â
Judy Peck lives nearby, and says after 33 years of living in the neighborhood, the last four have been a nightmare.Â
"I'm almost a prisoner, because the only place I can go is my front porch," Peck said. She won't even allow her great-grandchildren to visit, out of fear they might mistake a needle for a toy in her backyard.
"They say 'Granny, why can't we come to your house?' I said, CeCe, it's not safe down there," Peck said.
Peck says the homicide is the last straw for her, as she looks to sell her home between U of L's campus and Churchill Downs.
There are no suspects in the case and LMPD's Homicide Unit will investigate.
